DIY: Acorn Xmas Decorations

by Blu

This fall we have collected many acorns and we have decided to use them to decorate the house for the holidays, so here are some ideas to make Christmas decorations with acorns for your home or your Christmas tree, fun, simple and accessible even for kids.
What you’ll need:

  • acorns (store-bought or natural)
  • acrylic paint in various colors (also nail polish)
  • paintbrushes
  • glue
  • string / glitter / bells / felt balls / wax or whatever you prefer to customize them
Instructions:
First thing you must wash and dry your collected acorns: place them in a bowl of water, with your hands agitate the acorns to remove the dirt, drain and place them in a colander and throw off the dirty water, repeat this process until the water will be fairly clean (remove any acorns that have mold or are broken). Then place them on a towel or blotting paper to dry. You can let them air dry at least one day, but better to bake them to kill their insect residents (tiny holes suggest insects, but the oven will kill them): set the oven to the lowest setting (90°C) and leave the oven door ajar so moisture can escape, leave the acorns for 1 - 2 hours or until fully dried (moving the acorns every 30 minutes). Remove from the oven and let cool completely.
Now the acorns are ready for use, glitter or paint them as you like it, or keep them natural (in this case you can spray them with varnish or products for cleaning / wood protection), let dry completely, preferably for a night, then arrange them as desired.

There are many creative ways to use acorns for decorations, the easiest way is to put some into a bowl or spread on your table, you can hang them with a string, make candle holder or centerpiece, realize beautiful garland or tiny candles, decorations for gift packs, napkin holder or placeholder.

These below are just some of the possible decorations idea, so let your imagination run wild and have fun!

much fun wishes you Blu-
