Baking Soda Clay Christmas Decorations

by Blu

Sweet and simple ornaments perfect for your Christmas tree, wreath, gift tag, gifts or home decor, a very easy DIY also for the kids ^^
Ingredients:
  • 2 cups baking soda
  • 1 cup cornstarch
  • 1 ½ cup water
Decorations:
  • rope or ribbon
  • baking paper and rolling pin
  • lace, pine needles, leaves or other material to emboss the surface
  • paint, acrylic spray or clear nail polish (optional)
Method:
In a pot mix the baking soda and cornstarch, slowly add water and stir over medium heat for some minutes (it will thicken up pretty quickly). When it’s almost the same consistency as playdough remove from heat and allow to cool (cover it to keep it from drying out), then knead the dough until it become smooth.

Roll out the dough between two sheets of baking paper then use your favorite cookie cutter and cut into difference shapes. You can decorate/embossed the surface by inserting leaves, corrugated cardboard, wood, or lace doilies before using a rolling pin. Use a skewer to make holes for strings.

You can let the ornaments air dry (over night) or you can speed up this process by baking them in the oven to 80°C and bake for approximately 1 hour (turn the ornaments over a couple of times during the baking).
You can leave the clay white, or you can paint part of your creations once they are dry, draw on them or stamp (allow your creations to dry overnight before painting them), or you can also add coloring in your pot mixture both before cooking the ingredients or after the clay is made to divide and color the clay in different colors.

If you choose to seal your designs you can do so with varnish, acrylic spray or even clear nail polish.
